PostHeaderIcon How to use the rake technique while playing slide guitar?

Can anyone give me tips on how to rake when playing slide guitar. Normally you use your fretting hand to mute the strings you want to rake, but when playing slide, you can’t really mute those strings with the fretting hand because the slide is in the way. My guess is to use the fatty bottom part of the thumb and palm to mute, but I can’t get the technique down… does anyone have any tips on this technique? It is a technique that Derek Trucks uses a lot if you are confused about what I am talking about.
look at this video at around 3:24 for a specific example of Derek Trucks using this technique http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e1b1uOvXtMU

You need to drag your thumb lightly over the strings without fully engaging them. Most of the muting comes from the thumb itself as you’re dragging it. Also, he’s only raking the first few strings, which are not making contact with the slide (the slide is making contact with the 3rd or 2nd string) so he can help mute it up top with his index finger while keeping the slide engaged on the 3rd string.

If you practice it for a while you’ll pick up a feel for the timing of it.

What kind of slide are you using? If you are using a brass or steel slide, you might want to try a glass one…

…or some other material. The metal ones are not as generous with errant notes and tend to rattle if you’re not precise.

PostHeaderIcon Is it hard to learn how to play electric guitar?

Sortta. But it’s easier than piano or violin! :) Umm if you’re not willing to practice at least 20 mins. a day, then i’d say don’t try. But if you really want to play, i’d say go for it. It’s really fun to be able to play an instrument. But if u want to play and easy instrument, try the Electric Bass. It’s fun and easy!

PostHeaderIcon Guitar performance ?

I have an acoustic and electric guitar. A seagulS6 (acoustic) and an epiphone les paul with a spider line6 30 watt amp which im having problems with. Im new at the electric but have been playing the acoustic for a year and feel stuck. What programs are good for me to get better at playing? Learn and master the guitar? Jamarama? Need advice.

try looking up tabs of your favorite songs.

PostHeaderIcon Guitar playing?

Alright, so, I took guitar lessons before, but this was three years ago and I didn’t get very far…. at all. I learned some chords but I completely forgot everything. I’m trying to get back into it. Are there any good websites that can teach how to read guitar tabs or something? I’m trying to play a song (My Way by Limp Bizkit) and I watch videos of people playing it and I can’t follow their fingers. I guess it’s probably not a good song to start out with, but I really want to learn it.

this is a cover of the guitar for the song:

Gah, help please.

Ultimate-Guitar http://www.ultimate-guitar.com/ is probably the best site for guitar tabs.

Here’s a link to one of the tabs for the song you were after:

A good program for learning tabs is Guitar Pro 5:

Or PowerTab Editor:

(These are download links for the programs)
