PostHeaderIcon GUITAR PLAYERS ONLY: On a scale of 1-10: How important is finger dexterity in guitar playing?

Can a person with limited dexterity in their hands due to a disability (mild cerebral palsy) still learn to successfully play a guitar?

I have heard it rumored that a guitar player somehow had only up to the first joint of most of his fingers and could still play wonderfully.

You can definitely still play guitar. Here’s my advice: if you have a 3 or 4 fret reach, you should be fine with most chords. You can actually cover a lot of ground in soloing with a 3 fret reach (mainly the minor pentatonic scale). I’d just say go for it.

In fact if you only had 1 finger remaining on your left hand, you could still play guitar. The secret here is to use an alternate tuning to make the chords easier to play. You would remain in one key but could play hundreds of songs still. Don’t let dexterity get in the way.

Now, to answer your question specifically, I have written an article in my blog that explains dexterity’s place in playing guitar (I call it finger flexibility): http://guitarmann.com/articles/the-best-way-to-build-finger-strength-for-guitar

PostHeaderIcon how long does it take to learn to play a guitar or drums?

how many lessons does it take before your really good at playing the guitar or drums?

There’s a rule of thumb called the 10,000 Hour Rule, which says that it takes about 10,000 hours to master something new. But that’s not the point – if you’re enjoying the journey then it won’t matter how long it takes.

PostHeaderIcon What equipment to I need to start playing the guitar? Electric Guitar as a beginner?

My friend got me the Learn & Master guitar course, so I want to put it to good use seeing how he knew I wanted to learn.

To start,

You’ll probably need an electric guitar first of all =p Get a real one, try to get them from an actual store that sells guitar. Not like walmart or radioshack or something, the wood might not be real, who knows what kind of problems will come up.

You’ll need an amp and a cord.
light, thin guitar picks are recommended if your a beginner.

Knowledge is what you’ll need the most. Find out how to read "tablature"
tablature is a way of reading music… a really simple way. If you knew how to read tablature, you could play music from almost all of your favorite bands.

get tabs from:

Good luck with guitar! send me a video a year from now when your beast at guitar =D

PostHeaderIcon How to help my finger sped while playing guitar?

Hi. I can read notes and stuff. But I have I hard time making a song sound alright because of my finger sped. Does anyone have any hints or techniques to help me get my finger sped up?

Learn scales and use alternate picking when playing them. At first learn them to play them slowly and use metronome to work your speed up to the level you need.

PostHeaderIcon WHY DOES EVERYONE HERE WANT TO LEARN HOW TO PLAY GUITAR?

cant they just make an article here. like a book on how to play guitar. or a section or something. i love the performing arts section but its just gay seeing so many of the same question

" i got this acoustic guitar today and i really wanna learn how to play my favorite taylor swift songs "

seriously yahoo do something

i was JUST thinking of posting a question asking this.
i don’t come to Performing arts much but when i do there seems to be alot of Q’s about guitar in comparison to ”acting/violin” etc..

eh most people that want to play an instrument be it to look cool, to learn, to have it as a skill, to be a musician etc pick up a guitar.
supposedly 90% of self taught guitarists quit due to lack of direction & frustration (mind you they say 80% of statistics are made up ;P)

if you think this is bad you should check the martial arts section, every 2nd question is ”what martial arts is best for me/how do i become a MMA fighter”

Rory Gallagher- Too Much Alcohol (acoustic slide VERY catchy)

PostHeaderIcon How can I start learning how to play acoustic guitar?

I’m good at singing songs :P
My friends said if I can play guitar, it would be perfect.
So I wanna ask u guys here how to learn acoustic guitar fast?

If u wanna Learn How To Play Guitar, u must have a strong will and persistance first!
Second, it’s much better for u to have a teacher guiding u. Of course, it consumes money and time. But u can get an ebook with video lessons. Among those tutorials, jamorama course has a serial lessons ranging from beginner, mid-level, high-level, rock, blue etc. It will show u how to play guitar by pictures and videos. If u keep learning from jamorama, playing guitar will not be ur dream any more:)

PostHeaderIcon What should I get and do to learn from scratch how to play the guitar?

I’ve wanted to learn how to play the guitar for sometime now and I’m sicking of stalling. I would like to play the electric guitar, but that because I prefer the sound of the electric guitar then the acoustic. I was looking at some different started packs, and I’m not to sure what I’m should be looking at. If someone can give me some advice on a starter pack to get? Also a good book? And if someone can tell me how I should learn how to play, preferably self taught?

This might sound really stupid, but my sister tried to do that and she used Guitar for Dummies and it helped her learn the chords. It actually helped her a lot but she didn’t get that far because she gives up way too easily. I’ve played flute for a few years (although sometimes i really wish i would have picked electric guitar) so i know what i’m talking about. As soon you learn the chords and start actually playing, focus on differant scales to get started and then when you get those figured out, you can start playing short songs.

PostHeaderIcon How can I learn to play the violin?

I’m 18 years old and I’ve played the guitar since I was 14. I’m quite good at it, but I really would like to play another instrument as well. I love the violin and would like to learn how to play it. I hope I’m not starting it too late. I don’t know where to begin. Should I buy a violin first? What kind to buy? How do I find a good teacher? What kind of equipment will I need? I’d really love to learn to play the violin.

I’m in your position.. sort of. I have been playing the trumpet for 7 years, still do play it, but wanted to take up the violin. I am renting a violin for £5 a month from a music shop. This is because some people don’t have a good ear for music and you really do need one to play the violin, it’s pretty hard too so many people do give up. I had been playing for a month, broke my finger which was a let down and now have recently started playing again. If you go to your local music shop they should have a list of violin teachers which you can phone. All the things you need to start with is a violin, bow and rosin for the bow. The violin is a big step up from the guitar, you have to be committed, good luck!

Oh, and I’m 17 years old.
