PostHeaderIcon Is this a bad technique on playing the bass guitar?

I looked up the tab for Seven Nation Army (The White Stripes)
I play using only the index finger(Left hand) and pluck with the index finger (right hand)
I can’t keep up the time. Can I look up youtube on how to hold the bass properly?

yeah lol you got 4 fingers to use, use them all not just one i highly recommend lessons, half those youtube videos are s*it, a teacher can answer any questions you have like that & teach you proper technique.
watching videos isn’t that great an idea, would you let a surgeon that learnt via youtube operate on you? (exact same applies to bass)

also bass guitar for dummies is a good side resource to have alongside your lessons

PostHeaderIcon I need some tips on my guitar playing. whats my next step(Q for experienced guitarists)?

Hey everyone. Ive been playing for almost 7 years now and just recently got into lead playing almost a year ago(before i was mainly just doing rhythms).

to hear me play i have a vid of me playing with my band (The Durden Estate) performing our song called "Sandcastlevannia" where i play lead guitar pretty much the whole time. please watch and tell me what you think. im the one on the far right

http://vids.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=vids.individual&videoid=101216382

I am familiar with sweep/alt/finger/economy picking, finger tapping, pinch and natural harmonics, double stops, harmonic specificity, different kinds of bends(unison etc). I am know or am familiar with the Major and minor scale, the modes, pentatonics, inversions, how harmonizing with different intervals affects the feel(i prefer harmonizing with thirds the most personally), playing in different time signatures and how to play in swing.

I am looking for new techniques to add to my Guitar Playing so if you know any please let me know :D

MQ: wut is your favorite guitar technique and name a song that its in
haha he had to do hammer ons because he wasnt finished drinkin his water. And thanks for the Frusciante reference. I was never a huge fan but i had a friend that i used to jam with a lot that idolized him
well i do the sweep but i change the last note i hit. i go F, Eb, Db, Eb.i know the modes but i dont use them as much because im not as fluent with them and that song is mostly improv

You are not a bad player but I doubt you know the modes or, if you do, how come you don’t use them like diminished arpeggios which would be MOST efficient in that video. Secondly. try soloing by using string skipping. That will add an element to your leads.

Example, you wer playing a sweep in onepart of the song. You repeated the sweep 3 or 4 times. Why didn’t you use a diminished sweep and move up the fingerboard ? That would have been better in my opinion. As for my technique, it is spontaneous from guitar sweeps to linear playing which adds an element of speed without actually using speed. LOL…. I use lots of hammer-ons and pull-offs and especially, economy-picking for fast riffs.

Good Luck :) )

PostHeaderIcon How can I improve my strumming guitar technique/overall guitar playing?

I know…practice. But I don’t want to practice incorrectly. I took a guitar class so I have some chords down, but how to I know how to strum or fingerpick. Any good resources or helpful websites. My Guitar Playing sounds like a dying cat. Help!

Keep your fingernails very short if you’re strumming without a pick. If you use a pick, I suggest you buy the thinnest ones possible, because they’re much easier to control. You might want to try just strumming strings 1-2-3 (E-B-G) for a while until you feel more comfortable with the strumming motion. You might also want to view Frederick Noad’s video series, made in the late 60’s. A few cable stations still carry the series today, but you can also order from http://www.noad.com/Nvideos.htm

PostHeaderIcon What is the best way to strengthen fingers for guitar playing?

I have been playing guitar for over 5 years. Recently, I got a segull acoustic guitar which i like quite a bit. The only problems ive had are with bar chords, which have been more difficult to do than on my electric guitar. Any suggestions for makeing clearer guitar bar chords would be great (such as what string gauges to use)

Acoustic guitars, by their very nature, are harder to play than electric guitars. The string gauge is thicker and the action is a bit higher. There is not really anything that can be done to change that other than putting very light gauge strings on the acoustic. This might sacrifice some of the sound quality though. I have played some Seagull guitars and they play very nicely. I doubt if you could get the action much lower on them without running the risk of fret buzz. To be sure, take it in to the store where you bought it and have them put a lighter gauge string on it and ask if the action could be lowered at that time.
I think that you will just need to get used to it. After playing an electric for so long your fingers have gotten used to the reduced tension and lower action. The best thing you can do is just play the acoustic a lot! Doing basic finger exercises like the 4X4 can help improve strength and dexterity.
Here is an example, use all four fingers.
–2-3-4-5–
–2-3-4-5–
–2-3-4-5–
–2-3-4-5–
–2-3-4-5–
–2-3-4-5–
Play each string individually, walking your way across the neck. When you get to the top, reverse direction and come back down. Do this exercise for about 5 minutes a day. It will help immensely with strength and dexterity. It will also improve your coordination and articulation.

PostHeaderIcon what age did alex gaskarth from all time low learn to play guitar?

He supposedly already knew how to play guitar when he was in eight grade. Both his parents were musicians so I bet he knew how to play well by around 10 years of age.

"The guitarist Jack Barakat of All Time Low initially invited Gaskarth to form a band playing Blink-182 songs in eighth grade, along with their original drummer. Barakat told Alternative Press that they were not friends at the time (in 2003), since Gaskarth had just transferred from a private school and that Gaskarth had "hated" Blink-182 because he was the "Bob Marley and Incubus kind of kid." Eventually Barakat persuaded Gaskarth to listen to the band’s live album, The Mark, Tom, and Travis Show (The Enema Strikes Back!), and they started the band covering Blink-182 songs.[3]"

PostHeaderIcon How long did it take you to learn to play guitar?

I Got a rad accoustic electric guitar today from my grandpa as a hanukah gift. im confused by the chord chart im wicked blonde. i was curious of how long it took others to learn guitar so i can get an estimate fer how long itll take me.
Fun poll: whats your favorite song to play 0.o

Anyone can play guitar when they first pick it up, though you might not be able to play it well. Every guitar player learns to play more every day, it just depends how devoted you are to get to a level you consider good. I wake up at 5 or 6 every day and practice for usually about 5 hours, just because I always see room for improvement. Every day I find a new technique or a new riff or something. Its not like you learn how to play and then you’re just at that level forever. If you wanna be Johnny Ramone, learn the power chord and hit it really fast lol. If you wanna be Steve Vai, play for about a year and see what happens. Anyone who says its hard thinks they’re more important than they really are.
