Playing Guitar and Techniques?
okay, so i’ve always been a fan of metal and always loved playing guitar , so i figured, i’ll combine the two, i can play alot of techniques and if i can’t i’ve always done my best to nail it, but i’ve tried to play some BFMV solo’s and it’s speed i’m after, anyone got any tips for speed plays and finger strength, and i was wondering if there is anyway to increase the strength in my fingers, when i’m not playing the guitar?
any ideas would be appreciated.
James,
You can totally learn metal (its not that hard for an intermediate player).
Speed Exercise:
1. Choose a lick or a run that you like or are having a hard time with
2. Start the metronome at a slow sped for you where you can play it perfectly
3. Mark that speed on a chart
4. Increase the speed by 5-10bpm and see if you can play it perfectly at that speed
5. Rince and repeat until you get to a speed you cannot play it perfectly
6. Mark that speed on a chart (max)
7. Back off by 5-10 bpm and practice there playing it perfectly 10,20,100 times in a row.
8. Do this every day and watch your speed increase.
How to increase strength even when you are not playing:
1. When your hand is not doing anything, get in the habit of tapping different alternating fingers in different patterns.
2. Get a gripmaster. These are spring loaded devices that you can squeeze that will get the fingers stronger.
3. As crazy as it sounds, I’ve found doing pushups and consequently strengthening the forearms, can make a huge difference to how easy it is to grip the guitar and press down on the strings. It all has to do with how the muscles are attached and different points.
I know a website that has more details and learning techniques. The link is below.

How should I start to learn playing a guitar lead solo?
Ive been playing guitar for years now and i now how to compose a song, how to listen and ciffra a song, but then i cant still know all the tabs that a guitar consist of. I want to learn the basics of leading and the so called improvisation. Would you recommend me a website that teaches how to do it in a step by step process? i want to know the techniques and finger positions that a player should have to learn many new sound from the position ill make. thank you.
Henry,
How to learn to play guitar solos? I can answer the question right here! Here’s the approach I recommend for starting out learning to play guitar solos:
Play along with backing tracks:
Playing along with backing tracks works like this:
- download a blues backing track in the key of a
- get a chart of the pentatonic scale (your root note will be at the 5th fret on the 6th string)
- play any note in the scale over the backing track
Its great fun being able to make up your own lead parts.
There’s a website that has much more detail about this and other ways to learn. I’ll include a link below so you can dig deeper.
Good luck,
John
Is this a bad technique on playing the bass guitar?
I looked up the tab for Seven Nation Army (The White Stripes)
I play using only the index finger(Left hand) and pluck with the index finger (right hand)
I can’t keep up the time. Can I look up youtube on how to hold the bass properly?
yeah lol you got 4 fingers to use, use them all not just one i highly recommend lessons, half those youtube videos are s*it, a teacher can answer any questions you have like that & teach you proper technique.
watching videos isn’t that great an idea, would you let a surgeon that learnt via youtube operate on you? (exact same applies to bass)
also bass guitar for dummies is a good side resource to have alongside your lessons
I need some tips on my guitar playing. whats my next step(Q for experienced guitarists)?
Hey everyone. Ive been playing for almost 7 years now and just recently got into lead playing almost a year ago(before i was mainly just doing rhythms).
to hear me play i have a vid of me playing with my band (The Durden Estate) performing our song called "Sandcastlevannia" where i play lead guitar pretty much the whole time. please watch and tell me what you think. im the one on the far right

I am familiar with sweep/alt/finger/economy picking, finger tapping, pinch and natural harmonics, double stops, harmonic specificity, different kinds of bends(unison etc). I am know or am familiar with the Major and minor scale, the modes, pentatonics, inversions, how harmonizing with different intervals affects the feel(i prefer harmonizing with thirds the most personally), playing in different time signatures and how to play in swing.
I am looking for new techniques to add to my Guitar Playing so if you know any please let me know
MQ: wut is your favorite guitar technique and name a song that its in
haha he had to do hammer ons because he wasnt finished drinkin his water. And thanks for the Frusciante reference. I was never a huge fan but i had a friend that i used to jam with a lot that idolized him
well i do the sweep but i change the last note i hit. i go F, Eb, Db, Eb.i know the modes but i dont use them as much because im not as fluent with them and that song is mostly improv
You are not a bad player but I doubt you know the modes or, if you do, how come you don’t use them like diminished arpeggios which would be MOST efficient in that video. Secondly. try soloing by using string skipping. That will add an element to your leads.
Example, you wer playing a sweep in onepart of the song. You repeated the sweep 3 or 4 times. Why didn’t you use a diminished sweep and move up the fingerboard ? That would have been better in my opinion. As for my technique, it is spontaneous from guitar sweeps to linear playing which adds an element of speed without actually using speed. LOL…. I use lots of hammer-ons and pull-offs and especially, economy-picking for fast riffs.
Good Luck

How can I improve my strumming guitar technique/overall guitar playing?
I know…practice. But I don’t want to practice incorrectly. I took a guitar class so I have some chords down, but how to I know how to strum or fingerpick. Any good resources or helpful websites. My Guitar Playing sounds like a dying cat. Help!
Keep your fingernails very short if you’re strumming without a pick. If you use a pick, I suggest you buy the thinnest ones possible, because they’re much easier to control. You might want to try just strumming strings 1-2-3 (E-B-G) for a while until you feel more comfortable with the strumming motion. You might also want to view Frederick Noad’s video series, made in the late 60’s. A few cable stations still carry the series today, but you can also order from http://www.noad.com/Nvideos.htm

Wrist pain because of the way I position my thumb on the neck while playing guitar! Help?
When I play the guitar my thumb behind the neck pushes down really hard causing my wrist to become strained and in pain, thus limiting how long I can play. Are there any techniques or certain ways of holding my thumb behind the neck of the acoustic guitar without straining my wrist? Help would be much appreciated, seeing as I really don’t want to have to be wearing an Ace bandage while playing the guitar ![]()
Comes natural to me to hold my thumb along the backside of the neck when i set the guitar down on my left leg and play vs right leg.
