The Guitar is one of my favorites and I'm starting to learn it myself. The thing is ... You have to want to learn .. and stick with it. Don't waste his time or yours. It's a precious gift when a person learns to play and enjoy music and sharing it with others is a wonderful thing also. Stick with it.
