Vai is widely known for both his unprecedented Guitar Playing Techniques and the unique design of his signature series Ibanez Jem guitar. Variations of this basic pentatonic run are used by guitarists worldwide, most notably Kirk Hammett of Metallica and Dimebag Darrel of Pantera. In order to unleash the power of this exercise, you must learn how to apply the picking technique to other areas of the fretboard. Try moving everything up so that the 12th fret is played on every string. Then you would be playing E minor pentatonic.
